Janani Suraksha Scheme Key Features

The Janani Suraksha Yojana has the following features and benefits:

  • Implementation based on state performance in the health sector: Janani Suraksha Yojana’s healthcare services are available in all Indian states and union territories. These states, however, are divided into two categories based on their institutional delivery rate: Low Performing States (LPSs) and High Performing States (HPSs) (HPSs). The ten states are the eight EAG states, as well as Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and the North Eastern States.
  • Cash assistance in connection with Institutional Delivery Pregnant women are eligible for three antenatal check-ups and institutional delivery under the Janani Suraksha Yojana. Beneficiaries must register with health workers at the sub-centre, Anganwadi, or primary health centres in order to receive post-natal and neo-natal care. The scheme’s enhanced benefit payments are contingent on institutional delivery.
  • Cash Assistance on a grading scale: Another goal of the scheme is to reduce maternal mortality by encouraging qualified professionals such as doctors and nurses to deliver babies in health care facilities. To encourage institutional delivery, cash assistance is provided to women from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
  • Incentives for ASHA or a comparable worker: Several traditional birth attendants, known as ‘Dai,’ have been trained as part of the Child Survival and Safe Motherhood (CSSM) programme. Under this scheme, these workers are integrated into the delivery of care services.
  • Professional assistance for Caesarean Section: In the absence of government-employed medical specialists during delivery, a maximum of Rs. 1500 per pregnant woman is provided for hiring a private expert to perform the surgery at a healthcare facility.
  • Compensation for Tubectomy or Laparoscopy: If a Tubectomy or Laparoscopy surgery is recommended after delivery, the beneficiary is compensated under the family welfare scheme.
  • Cash Assistance is disbursed quickly: The scheme financially assists pregnant women by expediting the disbursement process. It provides Rs. 5000 in advance pay to every Auxiliary Nurse Midwife or health worker, subject to certain terms and conditions.
  • Collaboration with the Private Sector: Where there are insufficient infrastructure facilities in a particular area of an Indian State or Union Territory, the scheme has partnered with hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics from the private sector to provide the necessary healthcare services.Online Health Insurance Plan Comparison, Purchase, and Renewal
  • Provision for administrative expenses: 7% of funds released to a state – the sum of 4% for district authorities – can be used for administrative expenses for monitoring, IEC, and office expenses for implementing Janani Suraksha Yojana benefits.
