National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme
National Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for students in the eighth grade. The Government of India’s Department of School Education and Literacy invites applications for the National Means Cum Merit Scholarship Scheme 2023 from students in class 9 who have obtained at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the class 8 examination.
The National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme scholarship aims to provide financial assistance to deserving students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in order to prevent them from dropping out of class 8 and encourage them to continue their studies at the secondary level. The ‘National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme’ (NMMSS) is a Central Sector Scheme that was launched in May 2008 to provide scholarships to deserving students in classes IX-XII.
National Merit Scholarship Scheme primary goals are as follows:
- The scheme’s main goals are to award meritorious students studying in Government/ Zilla Parishad/ Municipal/Private Aided Managements whose parental annual income is less than Rs. 3,50,000/-.
Arresting dropouts in Class VIII and encouraging those students to continue their education until Class XII. - Notification of the National Means-Cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme Exam The following is a synopsis of the method used by the government to implement the scheme.
- Scholarships will be awarded based on performance in an examination to be held in November from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in all revenue divisions throughout the state.
- Reservation: For the award of scholarships in each district, state reservation norms will be implemented (a caste certificate from Mandal Revenue Officer has to be submitted by the candidate as proof in Original).

Eligibility Criteria for the NMMS Scholarship 2023
This MCM scholarship scheme is only available to meritorious and needy students in India, and all applicants must meet the eligibility requirements listed below in order to be considered for the scholarship selection test.
- Candidates for this MCM scholarship must be regular students in class 9 after receiving a clear promotion from class 8 with a grade point average of at least 55% or equivalent.
- Candidates must be enrolled in government/local body/government-aided schools.
- In order to continue receiving a scholarship in higher secondary school, the candidate must achieve at least 60% on the class 10 board exam.
- To continue the scholarship in class 12, the scholarship recipient must achieve clear promotion from class 11 in the first attempt with a score of 55% or higher. Students from the SC/ST categories are given a 5% mark reduction.
- The annual family income of the candidates should not exceed INR 1.5 lakh.
- Students enrolled in NVS, KVS, Sainik schools, or private schools are also ineligible for this MCM scholarship.
Scholarship Selection Test for NMMSS
Each state and university administers its own test to select students for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship. The state-level exams will include the following two tests:
- Test of Mental Ability (MAT)
- Scholastic Aptitude Examination (SAT)
The Mental Ability Test is made up of 90 multiple-choice questions that assess nonverbal and verbal metacognitive abilities such as critical thinking and reasoning. The test may include questions on classification, analogy, pattern perception, numerical series, hidden figure, and so on.
The Scholastic Aptitude Test consists of 90 multiple-choice questions covering subjects taught in grades 7 and 8 such as social studies, science, and mathematics. Each test (MAT and SAT) will last 90 minutes.
The following conditions will apply to the selection of students for NMMSS scholarships:
Students must pass both tests, MAT and SAT, with at least 40% aggregate marks for the two tests taken together. The cut off for SC/ST students is 32% aggregate marks.
For the scholarship to be awarded, students must have received at least 55% or equivalent grades in their class 8 examinations. SC/ST students are given a 5% discount.
NMMS Scholarship 2023 – How to Apply
If students wish to apply for the NMMS, they must ensure that they meet all of the eligibility requirements for this MCM scholarship. The applicants can then apply for the scholarship online through NSP. The application guideline is provided below to assist students in completing their NMMS scholarship form without difficulty.
- First, applicants must register as new users on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) by providing all required information.
- Candidates applying for the scholarship should keep scanned copies of all relevant documents on hand as they begin the application process.
- The applying candidate must provide information such as educational qualifications, Aadhaar card number, school enrollment number, bank details, and state domicile.
- When a candidate registers on NSP, an application ID is generated for them. This application ID is used as the ‘Login ID’ on NSP and as a reference in the future.
- Applicants in grades 9 and 10 should apply under the Pre-Matric scholarship category, while students in grades 11 and 12 should apply under the Post-Matric scholarship category.
- The applicant must be cautious when entering information such as his or her name, date of birth, email address, identification details, and mobile phone number.
- Upload all required documents and save the information as a draft.
